Federal and state laws prohibit harassment or discrimination in the work place based on an employee’s race, color, religion, age, gender, or disability. Federal and state laws generally require employers to allow employees rest breaks, meal breaks, and to pay overtime or straight time for work beyond 8 hours a day and/or 40 hours a week. State tort and contract law also protect an employee from being wrongfully terminated or mistreated in various other ways.
